SUMMARY:Welcome to Ometawehikew Indigenous Games!
DESCRIPTION:Currently there are more than 1.8 million Indigenous people living in the land that is now called Canada. This includes over 600 First Nations communities as well as Inuit communities and Métis communities each with their own unique histories\, languages\, cultures\, beliefs\, practices and- games! \n\nHistorically\, games were part of a highly evolved education system created by Indigenous people in order for them to survive and thrive on the Land. Through play\, children were taught ancestral survival skills including harvesting\, making and hunting.&nbsp\;\n\nWhile physically active game play helps children develop critical thinking skills and physical literacy\, many of these traditional games can strengthen their sense of connection to heritage\,culture and the Land.\n\nNatural and holistic teachings\, balancing oneself mentally\, emotionally and spiritually are naturally integrated into these fun\, physically demanding games of intuition\, chance\, endurance and strategy.\n\nThis session delves into Traditional Indigenous Games as a holistic approach to nurturing mind\, body\, and spirit. These games\, historically designed to build physical strength\, survival skills\, and strategic thinking\, will be taught to educators as effective tools for engaging students of all abilities. Participants will gain an understanding of the skills\, rules\, and cultural significance behind games from diverse Indigenous communities\, including the Dene\, Nehiyawak\, Niitsitapi\, Inuit\, Nakota Sioux\, and Saulteaux. \n\nBy actively participating in these games\, students will enhance their physical literacy\, develop sport-specific skills\, and gain a deeper appreciation for Indigenous history and cultural traditions. SUMMARY:Trans Women in Sport as Beacons of a Healthy Democracy
DESCRIPTION:This session will analyze the place of trans women in competitive sports\, both contemporarily and historically. Through tracing concurrent historical events and major advances for women’s sports in general\, I will position the inclusion of trans women in sport as a quantitative indicator of democratic principles beyond sport. Using an Albertan Social Studies 30 framing of liberalism and illiberalism\, I argue that fulsome inclusion of all women in sport is globally intrinsically linked with reduced inequity\, citizen engagement\, and freedom of the press. This argument will also be situated within the current Albertan context of trans exclusion and feature results from a province-wide study of the implementation of Bill 29. (Div 1\, 2\, 3\, 4)

SUMMARY:Villainification and Heroification of Evil: how we frame and reframe our villains and heroes
DESCRIPTION:Examination of the heroes and villains in the High School social studies curriculum and how they are currently conceptualized. Then\, through the implementation of anti-villainification\, we will look at how we can reframe the stories we tell and highlight in our classroom. Using this lens\, Melissa will then highlight how citizenship can be examined through recentering our heroes and villains\, through stories such as the Haudenosaunee lacrosse team\, the 1968 Olympics\, and others to show how we can both make differences through small acts of resistance (mini heroes) or through our banal actions\, we can perpetuate harm (mini villains). Participants will watch the 20-minute education cut of the film together\, then experience excerpts from the King’s Court Playbook for Success—an interactive digital resource that uses basketball plays as metaphors for key socioemotional and life skills.\n\nThe Playbook invites students to reflect on identity\, self-awareness\, communication\, healthy relationships\, resilience\, and what it means to “win” in life—on and off the court. Our thematic education guides\, which feature interactive lesson plans built around curriculum topics\, are supplemented by multimedia resources\, including videos (including the Heritage Minutes)\, podcasts\, quizzes\, and archival photographs that aim to promote historical thinking and inquiry among students. \nThis session will equip teachers to use Historica Canada’s free resources and help them recognize the value of incorporating multimedia resources into their classroom. Historica Canada’s most recent and popular projects will be featured as case studies during the session and will include resources that highlight perspectives of diverse Canadians. \n\nSession participants will recognize the importance of sport in a historical context\, both as a unifier and a divider. They will explore how sport is reflected in our resources\, and how incorporating multimedia resources in the classroom can expose students to a greater diversity of historical narratives and allow them to engage more deeply with the past. DESCRIPTION:How do we move students from being passive observers of injustice to active participants in democracy? This fast-paced\, dual-resource workshop provides educators with a complete blueprint for civic engagement\, connecting Alberta’s history of activism to the practical tools of modern policy change.\n\nPart 1: The Inspiration (35 Minutes) – Edmonton as a Human Rights City \n\nWe begin by exploring the "Living Legacy of Activism." Using a resource developed with the City of Edmonton Archives\, we introduce the Expose–Oppose–Propose framework. Educators will explore video interviews and lesson plans featuring local changemakers like Michael Phair and Carola Cunningham. This segment focuses on building empathy and critical thinking\, helping students see activism as a long-standing tradition in their own backyard.\n\nPart 2: The Action (35 Minutes) – Advocacy 101 & Policy Engagement \n\nBuilding on that inspiration\, we transition to Ignite Change\, a new three-module Google Classroom course. We move beyond theory to give students real-world tools to influence the laws that affect them. Using Canadian case studies (such as the advocacy following the cases of Amanda Todd and Rehtaeh Parsons)\, we demonstrate how "lived experience is evidence."\n\nWhat Educators Will Gain:\n\nThe Advocacy & Policy Toolkit: Practical templates for writing to MPs\, submitting testimony to Committees\, and navigating the 7 stages of a Bill.\n\nReady-to-Use Curriculum: Access to both the "Activism Project" and the "Youth Engagement in Policy" LMS modules.\nEducators will be guided through a high-impact curriculum that uses landmark Canadian case studies—such as the advocacy following the cases of Amanda Todd and Rehtaeh Parsons—to demonstrate how youth mobilization can force systemic legal change.\n\nParticipants will walk away with a ready-made Advocacy & Policy Toolkit\, including: &nbsp\;Advocacy vs. Lobbying 101: Clear definitions and ethical boundaries.
